Description
The stable block and yard at Morton House date from the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate hipped roof with lead dressings. The central bay has a pediment and a wooden clock tower with canted angles, a cornice, a lead domed roof, and a clock facing the courtyard, topped with a wrought iron weathervane. The building is two stories high with a three-bay front, where the central bay is slightly advanced. It has pilasters at the outer angles, a brick plinth, and an ashlar band at the first floor.
The central opening is semi-circular headed, leading to a door and staircase, and is flanked by two semi-circular headed windows with iron glazing bars, although the lower parts are now covered. These windows are set in deeper blank concentric blind panels. The left window has low semi-circular headed planked kennel doors on either side. On the first floor, there are three two-light sliding glazing bar sashes with splayed brick lintels.
To the right of the stable block is an attached single-storey carriage house with a hipped slate roof and two wide brick basket arches. To the left, a high stone-coped screen wall contains double gates to the yard, flanked by complex plan brick gate piers. This building is listed for its group value only.
