Description
The Monument is a structure built in 1770, made of ashlar stone. It features a Doric column topped with an urn, commemorating 29 years of happy marriage for Edward and Ann Weston of Somerby Hall. The monument has a square rusticated base with a plinth and entablature from which a circular entasised pillar rises. This pillar has a Doric capital and roses in the necking, along with a floriated frieze and a blocking course. There are three steps leading up to the urn, which is adorned with a snake coiled around it, biting its tail, symbolizing eternity, from which a flame issues. The long Latin inscription on the south face has become illegible over time.
