Description

The Church of St. Nicholas is a parish church dating to 1832, although the base of the tower may be of Medieval origin. It is constructed of yellow brick with ashlar dressings, a slate roof with lead dressings, and a stone-coped gable to the nave, with a hipped end to the chancel. The church comprises a western tower, a nave, and a chancel.

The three-stage tower has a plinth, two string courses, and a battlemented parapet. The first stage has a single pointed light on the south side, while the belfry stage features a double light under a pointed arch, with a clock on the south face. The west side mirrors the south side but without the clock, and contains a plank and muntin door set within a Tudor-style four-centred arch with a narrow cornice. A single light is located on the north side of the first stage. The north side of the nave features three windows, each with three lights, each light having a four-centred arched head and a hood mould. The church has a plain moulded cornice. The chancel is splayed at the eastern angles and has a doorway in a Tudor-style arch similar to the west door. The east window is a four-centred arch with a hood mould, of three lights with reticulated tracery renewed in the 20th century. The south side of the nave corresponds with the north.

The interior has plain whitewashed walls and a wooden ceiling. The western tower includes a porch at its base, with a 19th-century staircase leading to a gallery on the south side. The west door has a Tudor style with two glazed lights and a bordered stained glass surround, and four panels beneath. Three lozenge-shaped plaques bearing figures of saints adorn the walls of the nave. A wooden west gallery stands on four octagonal pillars and features panelled Tudor-style fronts; a central inscription in gold lettering reads: "This loft was erected in the year MDCCCXXXII at Mrs. Roadley's expense, John Feravy Church Warden." The chancel arch is pointed with a double splay and lacks imposts. Two further lozenge-shaped panels are located in the chancel walls.

The church fittings were carved by Vicar Townsend between 1845 and 1889 and include matching pine pews with roll-moulded tops, pierced quatrefoils, and trefoils. Monuments include a pair of white marble tablets on black marble backgrounds with sarcophagi, urns, and scrolls, located in the chancel at the east end. One is to Richard Dixon Roadley, died 1826, and the other to Richard Roadley, died 1825, and Ann Roadley, died 1858, both by G. Earle of Hull. A marble tablet with a Gothic stone surround commemorates John Frank, died 1769, within the nave. Stained glass in the nave dates to 1889 and is dedicated to Townsend, the Vicar who carved the fittings; the glass in the top of the east window appears to be from the late 18th century. The font is late 18th century, comprising an octagonal bowl on an octagonal pedestal with a square base.
