Description
This is an 18th or early 19th century walled garden, situated to the east of Gate Burton Hall. The garden walls are built of handmade red brick laid in English garden wall bond, showing some erosion from fruit tree branches that were repeatedly nailed to them. The bothies – small outbuildings – are constructed of red brick with slate roofs dating to the 19th century.
The garden has a large rectangular plan, with sheds and bothies attached to the exterior of the north and east walls. A lean-to glasshouse is located on the inner side of the north wall. The freestanding pool is not included as part of the listed structure.
The walls have several openings with vertical plank doors set under brick arches. Metal brackets along the top of the south wall support glazed panels. The bothies are lean-to ranges with ledged and braced doors, some with ventilation slits, under segmental brick arches. Internally, remnants of original features remain, including a red tiled floor, fitted wooden shelves likely used for apple storage, and a brick base for a copper. A late 19th or early 20th century curvilinear glasshouse, constructed using a wire tension system, is located along the north wall. A small swimming pool, contained within a metal-framed plastic structure and added in the late 20th or early 21st century, sits in the north-east corner of the walled garden.
