Description

The Old School and School House in Nettleham is a former school and residence, now serving community purposes. Built in 1856, it features coursed squared rubble with ashlar dressings and slate roofs, topped with four tall limestone stacks that have chamfered corners and moulded splayed tops.

The main school block has a gabled bellcote at the left end and connects to the house on the right. In front of the main building is a smaller, single-storey range with four bays. The house is one and a half storeys tall, showcasing an eight-bay irregular facade with a continuous moulded plinth. The main front has a central shaped wall stack, flanked by single three-light casements with chamfered mullions and ashlar surrounds. To the left, the four-bay block features two pairs of two-light casements. On the right, there is an advanced gabled porch with a planked door set in a pointed opening, topped by a circular light in an octagonal ashlar surround. The gabled house block has plain sash windows on both floors. The openings are adorned with shaped ashlar lintels; the first-floor window features a pointed relieving arch and herringbone masonry in the tympanum.

The two gables at the left end include another planked door with a circular light above, matching the porch, and a two-light casement with mullions and an ashlar surround, also featuring a circular opening in the tympanum. The gable displays a lozenge of herringbone work above the gabled bellcote. Three conical metal ventilators are positioned along the ridges.
