Description

Barrowby House, also known as Barrowby Hall, is a small country house dated 1691, with a small 18th-century addition and remodelled in 1852. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone, ashlar, and brick, featuring ashlar dressings and gabled and hipped slate roofs. It has a single ridge stack with coped triple ashlar flues, along with two similar side wall stacks that have double flues. The house displays a plinth, quoins, moulded eaves, and coped gables with kneelers.

It is two storeys plus attics and has an L-plan layout with five bays across the front and four bays on the side. The ashlar street front from 1691 features five windows on each floor, with stone cross mullions and leaded glazing. Two of the ground floor windows have been altered to 6-pane sashes. The rear of the house has irregular fenestration, including a three-light stone mullioned window on the left and two 19th-century gabled dormers above it.

To the left, there is an 18th-century two-storey brick addition on the southwest front, which includes a 6-pane sash window and a board door, both with segment arches. The 1852 garden front features a slightly recessed two-storey porch with a shouldered shaped gable. It has a single 8-pane sash window with a cornice above, and below it, an ashlar doorcase with Doric columns and entablature, leading to a round arched opening with a six-panel door and fanlight.

To the right of the porch, there is a gabled cross wing with a 6-pane sash window above a tall 8-pane sash window. The right return has similar fenestration, with four windows on each floor. The rear gable has a blank first floor and a 6-pane sash window below. All these windows have blocked surrounds and cornices. To the left of the porch, there is a single-storey gabled wing in the return angle, featuring a 6-pane sash window similar to the right wing.
