Description

This is a gatehouse, dating from approximately 1832-1838, built by Anthony Salvin for Gregory Gregory of Harlaxton Manor. It stands 400 metres north-west of the manor house and is accompanied by attached boundary walls. The gatehouse is constructed of ashlar and has a low-pitched roof concealed behind a parapet. It features two side wall stacks with triple square flues, all executed in a Tudor Revival style.

The building is two storeys high, with a basement, and comprises three bays. The windows are characterised by stone mullions, transoms, and leaded fixed lights. The east front, facing Harlaxton Manor, includes a projecting central bay with a square projection. It features a semicircular oriel window with narrow sidelights, flanked by double pilasters. Beneath, there’s a Tudor arched carriage opening. The flanking side bays feature a first-floor cornice and an eight-light transomed window on each floor, flanked by single pilasters. An arcade with rusticated arches and a central pier covers a doorway and a triangular oriel window to the northeast. The west front has a corbelled eaves band and a central square oriel window supported on corbels, displaying a crest of shields. A square stair tower, set at an angle and topped with a round arched bell turret, is located on the right end bay. Below the turret is a cross-mullioned window and a segment arched blocked doorway with a cornice. A doorway with a carved panel sits to the left of the tower, with a buttress to the right. The left side bay has a ten-light window with a cross-mullioned window below it, and a stepped buttress to the left. The north and south ends have a central external stack flanked by stepped buttresses. Adjacent to these are short coped walls enclosing a small yard. Beyond the yard, curving boundary walls are constructed of coursed squared stone with slab coping, extending approximately 10 metres to the north and 25 metres to the south. The gatehouse is within the registered Harlaxton Manor Gardens (Grade II*).
