Description

The garden wall to the east of the kitchen garden, along with a sundial, gateway, and two garden sheds, dates from around 1840. It is constructed of ashlar and cast iron. The tall ashlar garden wall features gabled and roll moulded coping, which ramps down on either side of a sundial positioned on top of the wall. The sundial includes a fluted frieze and pediment, with scrolls supporting the sides and a strapwork and jewelled motif at the base, reflecting 17th-century design. To the right of the wall, the garden gateway has a moulded ashlar surround, and the cast iron gate is decorated with lozenges at the base and spear tops on the verticals. Behind the wall, there are lean-to sheds made of coursed limestone rubble with pent slate roofs. This structure was built as part of the ornamental garden of Easton Hall for the Cholmeley family.
