Description
The Gates of Fulbeck Hall, built in 1733, are made of coursed limestone rubble, ashlar, and wrought iron. The gates consist of two leaves with ramped side screens and an elaborate overthrow. The side screens rest on dwarf walls with plain copings. The piers are square in shape and feature repousse capitals. The overthrow is richly decorated with scrollwork, grotesques, and oak leaf sprays, which support the bull's head crest and arms of Sir Francis Fane and his wife Elizabeth. The design shows clear influence from the French designer Tijou and may be the work of either John Warren of Cambridge or Edward Nutt, who created similar gates at Grimsthorpe Castle in 1730.
