Description
The former stables, built circa 1838-1844, stand 70 metres north-west of Harlaxton Manor and are adjoined by a screen wall. They were likely designed by William Burn for Gregory Gregory and are constructed of ashlar with gabled and hipped slate roofs. The architectural style is Renaissance Revival.
The building has a U-plan with a forecourt enclosed by a screen wall. A central two-storey square tower porch features moulded cornices to each floor and a coped parapet with a shaped gable and ball finials. The bays are divided by pilasters. The porch has a depressed 4-centred arched opening flanked by rusticated niches with keystones, and a shouldered round arched doorway also flanked by niches. A 20th-century door with sidelights and overlight replaces the original. Surrounding the forecourt are single-storey ranges with attics and splayed corner entrances. Dormers in the attics are supported by volutes, some with flat tops and others with round tops above the entrances.
The south-west side retains three blocked carriage openings. The screen wall has a central pair of square gatepiers with rusticated double pilasters, flanked by round arched arcades with plinth and moulded coping. Projecting shouldered ogee gables with kneelers and ball finials rise above, surmounted by a coped stack with square double flues. The exterior facades have six-light stone mullioned cross casement windows with cornices; many are blocked. The left gable has four smaller windows flanking the lower window. Recessed bay windows on the inner sides of the gables have flat-topped dormers, each with differing fenestration.
The rear elevation, buttressed and extending over two storeys plus a basement and attics, includes a projecting three-storey tower porch with shaped gables and a parapet with corner pedestals, all topped with finials. A first-floor ashlar balcony is supported by brackets, flanked by six-light cross casements, with traceried round windows above. A loft door with a projecting surround and bracketed cornice sits above, and a shouldered arched carriage opening is below. The buttressed left return has a projecting three-bay centre with a round arched carriage opening flanked by doors with traceried round overlights. The buttressed left return features stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. At each end of the rear elevation, a pair of shouldered round arched dormers with finials flank round windows with four keystones.
