Description

The garden temple, located 200 meters east of Belton House, dates from the early 18th century and was resited in 1816, with restoration occurring in the late 20th century. It is constructed of stucco with an ashlar front and features a slate roof, showcasing a Palladian style. The temple has a plinth and a central archway flanked by channelled rusticated piers, imposts, vermiculated voussoirs, and a keystone. Above the archway is a dentillated pediment. On either side, there are small set-back bays that contain round-arched niches topped with half-pediments, and each return features a small square window.

Inside, the temple has a stucco barrel vault and houses a memorial urn dated 1826, which stands on a square pedestal with a Latin inscription. The building is attributed to the time of Viscount Tyrconnel, who lived from 1702 to 1754. It is noted that the temple was possibly moved from Culverthorpe. The garden temple is situated within Belton Park, which is registered as grade I on the Gardens Register.
