Description
The Horse Monument in Morkery Woods is a Grade II listed structure dating from around 1850. It commemorates a horse named The Butcher, which belonged to Field Marshall Grosvenor. The monument is made of ashlar and takes the form of a low obelisk that stands on a rectangular tomb chest. The front panel features a low relief carving of a horse with a docked tail alongside a tree. The rear panel displays an eight-line poem that recounts the circumstances of old Butcher lying in Morkery Wood, although it has become somewhat worn over time. A portrait of "Big Black Butcher" by John Fernley is located in Grimsthorpe Castle.
