Description

No. 4 Austin Street dates from the mid-18th century. It is a three-storey building constructed of coursed rubble. The front to Austin Street has no windows except for a large, bowed oriel window that rises from the first floor and extends into a dormer. This oriel has three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on two floors and is finished in stucco, supported by a moulded stucco bracket over the entrance door. There are four semi-circular stone steps leading to a 19th-century studded door set in a stone architrave, with two foot scrapers to this door, and one to a plain door to the left.

The garden front is also three storeys high, featuring two bows that extend through all three floors. The upper two ranges of windows on the garden front have Gothic glazing bars within Venetian-style frames, using hung sashes. A central round-headed window is topped by a moulded hood. The mansard roof is covered in stone slates and includes two cambered dormers. A plain stone eaves cornice runs along the top.

A projecting porch, approached by a double flight of moulded stone steps with elegant wrought iron railings, adds to the building’s attractiveness. The garden front also features a number of windows, and its detailing contrasts with the more restrained street façade.

Nos. 2, 4, and 6 Austin Street form a group.
