Description

St Nicholas House, now a restaurant, is a house dating from 1817, located in Deeping St. Nicholas. It was previously known as The Hollies. The house is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a hipped slate roof that has overhanging eaves supported by paired brackets, and wall stacks. It has a T-shaped plan.

The front facade is three storeys high and five bays wide, featuring a central entrance with a seven-panel door and a plain fanlight. The door is set within a fluted Ionic open-pedimented doorcase, which is decorated with egg and dart and a dentil cornice. Flanking the door are pairs of windows with glazing bars. The first floor has five similar windows, and the second floor has five smaller, similar windows. All windows are set within cambered splayed brick arches.

Inside, the house retains fine fluted Corinthian columns on the architraves, as well as a decorative plaster ceiling. The staircase has stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. The two principal rooms have moulded plaster ceilings, one of which features a pendant decoration of bunches of grapes and acanthus leaves.
