Description

St. Guthlac's Cross is a boundary cross dating from around 1200. It is made of limestone ashlar and features a tapering rectangular shaft that stands approximately 1 meter high. The sides of the cross are slender and roll-moulded, with a small spur to the left. An inscription frames the shaft, which begins with 'Hanc Petra Guthlac...' The remainder of the inscription is somewhat unclear but has been translated to mean 'This stone, I say, is Guthlac's utmost bound.' This cross marks the boundary of land that was formerly owned by Crowland Abbey. It was once thought to date from the early 10th century and is scheduled as an Ancient Monument, No. 8.
