Description

The war memorial stands in the churchyard of Christ Church, Gedney Dawsmere, and was erected around 1919 to commemorate the men from the parish of Gedney who were killed during the First World War. Later inscriptions were added to remember the five men who died in the Second World War.

The memorial is constructed from limestone and comprises a three-stepped square base supporting an octagonal plinth, an octagonal shaft, and a gabled crucifix with Gothic cusping and a finely-sculpted figure of Christ. The plinth is inscribed with the dates '1914-1918' and the words 'To the / Glory of God / and in undying / memory of the / men from this / Parish who died / in The Great War', followed by the names of 21 fallen. An inscription '1939-1945' has been added, listing the names and ranks of the five men who died in the Second World War.

The village of Dawsmere was created in the 1860s by the Cardwell brothers, who drained the Gedney Marsh and built Christ Church to the designs of Ewan Christian. The war memorial is historically significant as a memorial to the impact of both World Wars on the local community. The memorial has group value when considered alongside Christ Church and the vicarage, also designed by Ewan Christian. The memorial is noted for its delicately carved limestone, particularly the sculpted figure of Christ on the cross.
