Description
The Homestead is a former Medical Superintendent's House, built in 1902 by A. E. Gough, and recently used as offices. It is designed in the Italianate style and constructed from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, topped with slate hipped roofs and featuring five stone stacks. The building has flush ashlar quoins, a chamfered plinth, ground and first floor cill bands, a broad first floor band, and dentilated eaves.
It is two storeys high, with a west front that has a six-bay main block. The central two bays project slightly and are topped by a pediment. The right side features a round-headed doorway and window flanked by Ionic pilasters, with two plain sash windows to the right and a single plain sash and an ashlar canted bay window with three plain sashes to the left. Above, there are two central plain sashes with moulded surrounds, with two plain sashes on either side. To the left, there is a lower two-storey service wing with three bays and plain sashes.
The south front includes a two-storey stone canted bay window with three sashes, a single plain sash to the right, and two sashes above. The east front has irregular fenestration, featuring a Venetian staircase window with an ashlar surround. The building was constructed as part of St John's Hospital.
