Description
The Stables to Culverthorpe Hall is a building dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It was constructed for the Newton family and features limestone ashlar and coursed limestone rubble, topped with Collyweston slate roofs that have raised stone coped gables. The building has a T-plan layout and an irregular front that is single storey plus attics, consisting of eight bays.
At the center of the façade are two blank 18th-century doorways with plain imposts and keyblocks beneath semi-circular arched heads, each set within slightly advanced and pedimented bays. These doorways are flanked by single two-light cross mullioned windows with leaded lattice casements and moulded cornices. To the left of the central doors is a raised and fielded panelled door set in a plain ashlar surround, while to the right is a blocked doorway with an ashlar architrave. The roof features three dormers with raised stone coped gables, ashlar cheeks, and two cavetto mullioned casements with leaded lights and moulded cornices.
Inside, the building retains a clasped purlin softwood roof and includes 19th-century looseboxes. The rear of the structure has a 19th-century added wing and a chamfered segmental carriage arch.
