Description
Coleby Hall is a country house, now divided into two houses, with origins dating back to the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. It is constructed from coursed rubble and ashlar, topped with red tiled ridge roofs and stone stacks. The building stands at 2½ storeys and is arranged in a U-plan with three ranges. The east entrance front was rebuilt in 1628 for Sir William Lider and features eight bays that are irregularly arranged beneath six stone coped gables with finials. The windows are primarily 18th-century glazing bar sashes of various sizes, with small attic sashes in the gables, all having wooden lintels.
There is a 19th-century, two-storey porch that is off-centre, which includes a glazed round-headed door and a large glazing bar sash above, both with dripmould hoods. The five-bay north wing has datestones in its two stone coped gables, one dated 1653 and the other 1722, indicating that this wing was likely added in 1653 and later remodelled and re-fenestrated in 1722. The first floor retains five 18th-century glazing bar sash windows, while the ground floor has five 19th-century sash windows, with the western ones set within a slightly projecting 19th-century bay. All these windows feature stone lintels and sills. The irregular south wing underwent restoration in 1892 and again in 1910. Inside, the rooms are predominantly from the 19th century, showcasing a fine stone chimney piece in the hall and a carved balustrade on the newel staircase.
