Description

Country house, dating from the 16th century and extensively restored and enlarged in 1912-1914 by Biddulph Pinchard. The construction is timber-framing with curved braces, alongside coursed rubble with ashlar dressings. The roof is tiled, with four external moulded stone stacks with set-offs, one moulded stone ridge stack, and three tall brick stacks. The house is two storeys plus an attic, arranged in a truncated H-plan with a service wing to the west. The main cross wing and north front of the service wing show evidence of the earlier 16th-century house.

The main south front has a recessed three-bay centre, flanked by single-bay gabled cross wings. The centre has a stone ground floor with three, three-light chamfered mullioned windows, and timber framing above with three, four-light projecting cross windows, and three triangular dormer windows above, each with a three-light casement. The stone cross wings have coped gables and quoins, each with a single five-light chamfered cross window on both floors, and a single three-light chamfered mullion window above in the gables.

To the west, the timber-framed two-storey service wing has an open loggia supported on wooden columns on the ground floor, with irregular casements above, and a gabled cross wing to the west. The north entrance front has a three-bay centre with a two-storey projecting porch to the west and a gabled cross wing to the east. The centre has a stone ground floor with a central four-light chamfered mullioned window, and timber framing above with three, four-light cross windows, the central one projecting, above three triangular dormers with two-light casements. The porch has a single five-light cross window on the ground floor and a single four-light cross window on the jettied upper floor, with a gable above.

The east front of the west cross wing has a small doorway and two three-light chamfered cross windows on the ground floor. Above, there are two three-light chamfered and mullioned windows, and a single light window above the door. The service wing to the west features an irregular four-gabled, two-storey stuccoed front.

Inside, the hall contains a large 16th-century stone fireplace, and there is an imported 17th-century staircase.
