Description

Washingborough Hall is a small country house, now operating as a hotel, dating from the early 18th century, with later alterations in the late 18th and 20th centuries. The house is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, with a slate roof and two stone stacks. Quoins are present. The west front has three bays, with a central doorway approached by five steps. The doorway is surrounded by wooden pillasters and a projecting pediment supported on Doric columns, sheltering a partly glazed door with an overlight. Above the doorway is a Diocletian window with slender glazing bar sashes. Flanking the central bay are projecting stone bay windows, each two stories high with hipped roofs, and containing three glazing bar sashes on each floor, with three smaller sashes above. The rear, which served as the original entrance front, has a single, centrally painted doorway with a rusticated Gibbs surround and flanking side lights, along with an irregular arrangement of windows of various dates.

The interior features a staircase with a single return flight, square panelled newel posts, and three turned balusters with knops to each tread. A separate single flight of stairs leads to the basement and has a closed string with plainer turned balusters. A single marble fireplace, thought to have been installed around 1840, is also present.
