Description
The Church of St Wilfrid is a parish church that dates back to the 12th century, with later additions from the 15th, 17th, and 19th centuries. After a fire in 1599, the nave was restored by John Tirrel. The church is built of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features plain tile and lead roofs. It has ashlar coped gables with kneelers and includes a tower, nave, north and south aisles, a south porch, and a chancel.
The 12th-century west tower shows signs of earlier structures to the west, which are now concealed by a large 17th-century buttress. The tower is adorned with small stair lights, two-light 12th-century bell openings, gargoyles, battlements, and pinnacles. The 15th-century castellated nave has three two-light chamfered mullion windows in the clerestory. The north aisle, added around 1870, features four two-light pointed windows and a small doorway. The east window, from the 19th century, is a three-light design with flowing tracery. The south chancel contains a small 15th-century two-light window with a dripmould and a fine 15th-century three-light window that was originally located at the east end. The south nave has three 19th-century pointed windows and a gable porch with stone coping, along with a notable door dated 1602.
Inside, the church has three-bay nave arcades supported by Tuscan Doric columns from 1601, which hold medieval arches. There is a 19th-century rood screen and an ogee-headed piscina. A monument to Sir Thomas and Lucy Skipwith can also be found within the church.
