Description

This is a house with attached former warehouse and offices, dating from circa 1830, with additions made circa 1880 and in the 20th century. It is constructed of yellow Ewerby brick with ashlar and terracotta dressings, and has slate roofs. The building is two storeys high.

The original house has a shallow-pitched slate roof with deeply overhanging eaves. It features a chamfered plinth and a five-bay front, with a projecting three-storey central tower. The central doorway is round-headed, with double six-panel doors and a fanlight, set within terracotta-decorated jambs, arch, and keystone. Flanking the doorway are pairs of Doric pilasters supporting an entablature. The upper floors are quoined, with a plain sash window in a pedimented surround, and a small circular window above. Bracketed eaves support a pyramidal roof topped with an ornate iron finial. To the left of the main house is a wing dating from circa 1830, with two bays slightly projecting, featuring single French windows at ground floor level and single glazing bar sashes above. To the right is a single external stack and a French window with margin light glazing bar sashes above.

A former nursery wing, also dating from circa 1830, extends to the north. Originally eight bays, it is now reduced to five, articulated by brick pilasters with ashlar capitals and an entablature parapet above. The ground floor has been altered by a single-storey 20th century addition. A stone plaque sits above the former centre bay, and the remaining four bays have margin light windows. A projecting wing to the north has a two-bay east front which is blank on the ground floor, with matching windows above. The street front of this wing has five bays; the three bays to the left each have a single glazing bar window, followed by a doorway spanning the two right bays, framed by an ashlar Doric column surround and a six-panel door with overlight. Above are three glazing bar windows and an inserted 20th century plate glass window.

The former seed warehouse, attached to the south and now used as offices, is two storeys high and thirteen bays wide, with a projecting three-bay gabled addition. Each bay is defined by plain brick pilaster strips. It has tall margin light windows on the ground floor and smaller matching windows above. The projecting three-bay addition features three round-headed windows within a large pediment. A single projecting wooden sash hoist is located on the first floor of the south front.

Inside the house, panelled doors and a hardwood staircase with turned balusters are present. The main reception room to the south has an ornate plaster cornice and frieze, and a roundel within a grey marble frame. It features arched recesses with fruit and garland decoration in the spandrels, and keystones bearing the initials "CS" for Charles Sharp.

The site was originally laid out as a nursery and seedman's business for John Sharp circa 1830 and was considerably enlarged circa 1880 for Charles Sharp, who specialised in seed dealing.
