Description
The Former Bluecoat School, also known as Leeke School and later Lincolnshire College of Art and Design, is located on Christ Hospital Terrace in Lincoln. It was built in 1784 by William Lumby, with the east wing added around 1790 and mid-19th century additions. The building was converted around 1975 and is constructed of brick with stone dressings and a slate roof, featuring two brick stacks.
The exterior includes a string course, eaves cornice, and a coped brick parapet. The south side has a symmetrical block on the left, consisting of three storeys and five bays. The ground floor has square windows set in a blind arcade with round arched stone heads. The central entrance features a Doric doorcase with a pediment, a six-panel door, and an overlight, flanked by two glazing bar sashes. Each floor above has six similar sashes, with the one above the door having a moulded surround and cornice. To the right, there is a recessed single bay with a glazing bar sash in a former doorway, which has a bronze plaque inscribed "Founded by Richard Smith MD June 1st 1612". Above this, there is a sash on each floor. The higher east wing has two glazing bar sashes and a door from around 1900, with a central Venetian window above that features a keystone, and a glazing bar fixed light with a moulded surround above that. To the right again is a 19th-century addition that is two storeys tall.
Inside, there is a 19th-century cantilevered stone staircase with a cast-iron balustrade. The Bluecoat School served as a charity school for boys and closed in 1883.
