Description

Hilton House is a house, later converted into flats, dating from the 18th century, with alterations around 1840. It is constructed of stucco, with a hipped slate roof and four side wall stacks. The house has a plinth, a first-floor band, and rusticated quoins. The south front has two and three-storey sections, with four bays. To the right are two tent-roofed canted bay windows, and to their left is a window with a pilastered surround and cornice. Above are four windows with multiple keystones, all margin-light sash windows. The east side features an off-centre projection with a rusticated porch to the left, incorporating pilasters and a cornice. It has a round-headed doorway, a 19th-century half-glazed door with sidelights, and a keystone. To the left, within an angled projection, is a plain sash window in a round-headed opening with a keystone. To the right is a square bay window with pilasters and a cornice, containing plain sashes. Above this are two glazing bar sashes with multiple keystones, and above again, two smaller glazing bar sashes. A rear wing extends to the right, featuring a tripartite sash window on each floor. The interior was not inspected. Attached to the north-west side is a stucco panelled wall with coping, and a pair of square gatepiers with cornices. The house was formerly the residence of William Hilton, a historical painter, and was subsequently owned by his brother-in-law, the painter Peter de Wint.
