Description
The Greestone steps and arch, along with the adjoining Close wall to the west, are significant features located on the south side of Greestone Place in Lincoln. These elements date from the late 13th century to the 14th century, with restorations and the renewal of the archway occurring in the mid to late 20th century. The structure is made of dressed stone, brick, and ashlar.
The irregular stepped pathway is approximately 80 meters long and includes a chamfered archway with a hoodmould, which has a restored 19th-century lamp mounted on a bracket on the north side. To the right of the archway, there is a late 20th-century brick retaining wall. On the left, a 14th-century wall features gabled coping. The section of the Close wall extends westward for about 200 meters and has slab coping and intermediate buttresses.
