Description
Manor Farmhouse is a reduced former country house that served as the seat of the Bolle family. It dates from the mid-16th century and has been altered in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of red brick with some dark headers in English bond, and features greenstone ashlar quoins, with parts of it rendered. The roof is slate, with gable stacks, one of which is external and stepped, having been rebuilt in the 20th century. The house has a T-plan layout, and the rear range may be older but has undergone significant alterations.
The farmhouse is two storeys plus a garret, with a five-bay front that has an embattled offset at the first floor. There is an off-centre glazed door with a 19th-century hood supported by carved brackets. To the right of the door is a 20th-century tripartite sash window, while to the left is a glazing bar sash, another similar tripartite window, and a blocked doorway featuring a double chamfered pointed Tudor arched opening set in a chamfered rectangular surround, which now contains a small Gothick leaded light. The first floor has five glazing bar sashes with timber lintels, and there is evidence of earlier window openings in the brickwork. The left end of the building appears to have been cut down, while the right end has patches of greenstone.
Inside, the farmhouse features deeply moulded cross beams with large shield imposts and moulded joists throughout the ground floor. There is one arched opening, and on the first floor, there is an old planked door that lifts off its hinges. Sir John Bolle, who is buried in the nearby church and was also associated with Thorpe Hall near Louth, served as a captain during operations against Cadiz and was appointed governor of Kinsale in Ireland.
