Description

Ailby House Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that has been altered and extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of colourwashed brick, some in English bond, with a thatched roof featuring brick coped gables that have tumbled on the right side. The building was possibly originally timber-framed. It has a T-shaped plan and includes single ridge and gable stacks. The two-storey, irregular four-bay front has a central half-glazed door, now covered by a 20th-century rustic timber and thatch porch. To the left of the door are two windows, and to the right is a single tall, plain sash window, both with segmental brick heads. Four through-eaves margin-light eyebrow dormers are on the first floor. Above the door is a pair of bordered lights to the eaves, separated by a timber post, which may be a remnant of an earlier timber frame. The right-hand three bays have dentillated brick eaves, while the left-hand bay appears to be an early 19th-century addition. At the rear, a ramped gable extends over a catslide roof, formerly a dairy.
