Description
No. 118 on West Street is a cottage dating from the 16th century, with later alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries. The building features a red brick base and gable in English bond, while the remainder is constructed in Flemish bond. It has a half-hipped thatched roof with two ridge stacks, one of which is axial. The cottage is a single storey with attics and has an irregular five-bay front. The entrance is off-centre, featuring a four-panelled door flanked by single glazing bar sash windows. To the left of the entrance is another glazing bar sash and a planked door. All openings, except for the planked door, have segmental brick heads. In the attic, there are two through-eaves dormers with thatched gables and sliding glazing bar sashes. Inside, the cottage retains simply chamfered beams on jowled posts, suggesting an earlier use of timber frame construction.
