Description
Alloa Cottage and Potters Rest Cottage are a pair of cottages located on the northwest side of West Street in Alford. They date from the 17th century, with some alterations made in the late 18th century. The cottages are constructed of red brick, with No. 116 being colourwashed. They feature thatched roofs, raised brick coped gables, and two ridge stacks, one of which on No. 117 has been rebuilt in yellow brick.
Both cottages follow a lobby entry plan and are single storey with attics. They have a plinth and a brick eaves band, presenting a seven-bay irregular front. Signs of earlier window arrangements can be observed in the brickwork. The entrance to No. 116 includes a six-panelled door flanked by single glazing bar sashes, with a blank opening to the left, while No. 117 has a further four-panelled door also flanked by single glazing bar sashes. All openings feature segmental heads.
There are four dormers through the eaves, which have brick coped tumbled gables and thatched roofs. The dormers on No. 117 contain sliding glazing bar sashes, while No. 116 has 20th-century glazing bar casements.
