Description

Maltby Windmill is a three-storey tower mill constructed in 1841 by Saunderson's of Louth. It is located on the east side of Main Road, Maltby le Marsh. The mill is built of pitch-coated red brick and features a late 20th-century replica fibre glass ogee cap, with brick corbelling beneath. A double leaf timber door is set within a segmented brick arch at ground level, while the first and second storeys contain 20th-century casement windows. The interior retains the first and second floor timbers and a central timber shaft, although most of the original machinery has been lost. Maltby le Marsh windmill is a rare survival of an early 19th-century tower mill; this building type was once common in the 18th and 19th centuries and formed a significant part of the rural English landscape. Despite the removal of much of its internal machinery, the mill retains some evidence of the corn-milling process within a comparatively little-altered structure, contributing to its group value.
