Description

This site features a First World War pillbox built in 1917, along with a Second World War pillbox and anti-tank cubes constructed between 1940 and 1941.

The First World War pillbox is made of concrete reinforced with expanded metal lath sheeting and steel rails, poured in place using timber shuttering on the inside and sandbag shuttering on the outside. It has a single cell with a trapezoidal shape. The northeast elevation, facing the sea, is blind and convex. The northwest and southeast elevations each have a low-set, wide-splayed machine gun embrasure. The rear of the structure has a rebated doorway that is mostly blocked with late 20th-century brickwork, accessed by a shallow trench. The exterior has a rusticated look due to the sandbag shuttering.

Inside, the pillbox is now mostly filled with sand. Below each embrasure, there are recesses believed to have held the front leg of a machine gun tripod.

The Second World War pillbox is made of reinforced concrete, also poured in place with timber shuttering, and is only 0.35 meters thick, making it bullet and blast proof but not shell proof. It has a rectangular plan with three cells; the central cell is an open well with a concrete post for mounting a light anti-aircraft machine gun above an ammunition recess. On either side, there are bricked-up doorways leading to enclosed chambers, each featuring a single central embrasure on three external faces.

Additionally, there are ten anti-tank cubes arranged in a diamond pattern across three rows. These cubes are made of reinforced concrete and measure approximately 5 feet (1.5 meters) across.
