Description
The Tattershall Thorpe War Memorial is a commemorative structure honoring those who served in World War I and II. It is constructed from red brick with limestone dressings and takes the form of an entrance arch to the nearby Methodist Chapel.
The exterior features an outer triangular arch adorned with a cornice of dentilled brick, a single course of stretchers, and flat stone coping topped with a stone finial. The inner pointed arch is made of stone and includes a roll moulding, a diamond-shaped keystone, and imposts. Flanking the arch are square brick pillars with a stone plinth course and flat caps. The jambs and gable ends of the arch extend slightly beyond the outer sides of the pillars. The entrance arch includes a pair of low timber gates, which are not original to the structure.
On the front (west) side, the memorial displays three marble tablets with black lettering. The tablet at the apex of the gable head reads: ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN SACRED REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF TATTERSHALL THORPE WHO FELL IN THE TWO WORLD WARS’. The left pillar features the names of three men inscribed with ‘1914-1918’, while the right pillar lists three men with ‘1939-1945’.
