Description

The Church of St. Edith is a parish church dating from the 15th century, with restorations carried out in 1777, 1855, and 1891. It features rendered and whitewashed stone, along with ironstone and ashlar dressings, topped with lead roofs. The church comprises a nave with a bellcote and a chancel.

The west end showcases a continuous moulded four-centred arched doorway, adorned with trefoil spandrels and a moulded square hood featuring human head labels. Above the arch is an inscription stating "repaired 1891," along with a quatrefoil that contains the initials ED IIH and the date 1500, with a P above. The 19th-century gabled bellcote is topped with a cross, while the north side of the church is blank.

The east wall of the chancel includes a 19th-century window with wooden intersecting tracery and a moulded hood. On the south wall of the chancel, there are two 15th-century two-light windows with cusped heads and square moulded hoods. The south wall of the nave features one 19th-century two-light window and a 15th-century two-light window, both with cusped heads and moulded pointed hoods.

Inside, the chancel arch is basket-shaped. The nave has a queen post roof, while the chancel's king post roof is dated 1777. In the chancel, there is an 18th-century font that has been reset as a piscina. All fittings are from the 19th century and include four commandment boards, two hatchments, and two oak figures of angels playing instruments positioned on either side of the altar. Additionally, a scrolled bracket on the north side of the chancel supports a marble bust of Lady F. Beauclerk, who died in 1877.
