Description

The Louth War Memorial commemorates those who died in the First and Second World Wars and is made of stone. It is situated within an oval area defined by a low stone wall topped with low railings, created by removing part of the almshouses garden. On the east side, the oval connects to the wall surrounding the almshouse garden via a low platform, accessible by steps from the pavement on either side. There are also low semi-circular planters made of stone walls similar to those of the memorial, each containing a single tree.

The memorial features three octagonal steps leading up to an octagonal two-tier plinth. Both tiers are inscribed on all sides with the names of over 200 individuals who died in the Great War. The top tier has a moulded cornice above which is a short pillar, with pilasters featuring black shafts separating its four faces. Two faces display lion's heads with wreaths, while the other two show shields and wreaths, with the southern face inscribed in memory of those who fell in the Great War. Above the cornice, a short square plinth supports a soldier in service dress, standing against a tree stump and holding a rifle in the at-ease position.

At the base, leaning against the three stepped structure, are three shields. The outer two shields list the 77 names of those who died in action during the Second World War, while the central shield bears the names of 15 civilians who were also killed.
