Description

The Church of St Helen is a parish church built in 1747 with some mid-19th century alterations. It features rockface ashlar with ashlar dressings, and some later rebuilding in red brick. The church has ashlar quoins and a chamfered rusticated ashlar plinth, topped with a pantile roof. The gables are brick coped with some tumbling, and the south side has dentil eaves. The nave and chancel are under the same roof, and there is a 19th-century wood and lead cupola at the west end, which has a louvred base and two arches on each side.

The west wall, which has brick at the gable apex, includes a moulded ashlar doorway with a pendant keystone, an 18th-century panelled double door, and an overlight. The gable apex features a single oval ashlar plaque inscribed "E.H. Church Warden 1747". The north wall, made of rockface ashlar, has two round-arched windows surrounded by flush ashlar quoin surrounds. The east wall, with brick at the gable apex, has a single semi-circular arched opening with a moulded ashlar archivolt and keystone, supported by a pair of ashlar pilasters; this opening is now blocked with brick. In the gable apex, there is a circular pivotal glazing bar casement with four ashlar keyblocks. The south wall, made of brick, has two segmental arched glazing bar cross casements with ashlar imposts and keyblocks. The interior features a panelled ceiling.
