Description

Louth Hospital, originally a workhouse, was built between 1837 and 1839 and later expanded. It was designed by George Gilbert Scott for the Louth Poor Law Union. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features Welsh slate hipped roofs. There is an eaves band and an ashlar band at the first floor level.

The central section has a window pavilion with side wings and two-window end pavilions. The entrance pavilion projects forward and has chamfered angle bays on either side that rise above the roofline, topped with ashlar coped pediments. The entrance features a central panelled doorway with a painted pilaster doorcase, flanked by two single plain sash windows. Above this, there is a central plain sash window with two similar sashes on either side. The top storey is taller and has south-facing round-headed sashes set in round-headed panels, with a continuous ashlar impost band.

The flanking side wings have south-facing plain sashes on each floor, with ashlar eaves lintels above the top floor. Each projecting side pavilion has a two-window facade, with three sashes on the ground floor and two windows on each of the upper floors. The side facades also feature similar sashes. The rear facade mirrors the main front in composition, primarily using two-light casements, and the central pavilion has a two-storey projecting wing topped with a hipped roof.
