Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church dating from the mid-16th century, incorporating reused stonework from the medieval Augustinian Priory that once stood on the site. It was restored in 1962. The church features roughly coursed reused ashlar and brick, with thatched roofs and moulded coped gables. It consists of a nave and chancel, with a rectangular chamfered west window. The north wall includes a blocked round-headed doorway and a three-light window with chamfered mullions. The east and south windows are similar but consist of two lights, and the south nave window matches the one in the north wall. A triangular-headed south doorway has a splayed surround and a reused moulded head.
Inside, the church has a plastered chancel arch that features reset voussoirs from an early 13th-century dogtooth archway, likely from the nearby Augustinian Priory. The interior also includes early 18th-century tall turned baluster altar rails, a panelled pulpit with balusters leading to the steps, and box pews. Additionally, there is a plain octagonal font from the 14th century with a moulded base.
