Description
This listing describes a chest tomb and gravestone located 10 paces from the south transept in the churchyard of the Church of St. Swithin. The structures are made of limestone ashlar and date from 1749 and 1761. The rectangular gravestone features a segmental head and a scrolled cartouche adorned with cherubs, commemorating William Base, who died in 1749. Beneath the cartouche is an epitaph. The chest tomb is dedicated to John Spur, who died in 1761, and includes side inscription panels and gadrooned corner pilasters. On the west end of the tomb, there is a semi-circular headed niche that contains a carving of Christ Triumphant.
