Description
Cotton Hall and garden wall is a farmhouse that possibly dates back to 1689, built for the Cotton family. It has undergone alterations in the 19th century, with some minor changes in the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick in English bond and features an old plain tiled roof with steeply pitched tumbled gables, moulded brick kneelers, and ridge and axial ridge brick stacks with bands. It has a U-shaped plan with a rear stair projection and is two stories tall with garrets, presenting a five-bay front that was originally seven bays, with the end bays advanced and separately gabled.
On the left side, there is a doorway that is now covered by a 20th-century lean-to, and to the right, there is a 19th-century tripartite sash window alongside a plain sash window. The first floor has three similar windows. The advanced wings each contain a single sash window and a blocked opening on each floor, with a blocked opening in the gables. All openings feature brick segmental heads. At the rear, there is an early 18th-century door and frame.
Inside, the building retains a dogleg staircase in the rear stair projection, which has large barley sugar turned balusters with acorn bases and a moulded handrail. The ceilings feature chamfered and ogee stopped beams. To the right of the front, there is an 8-foot high brick garden wall in Flemish bond, with pilaster brick buttresses at the front and plain brick coping that steps to the right-hand end.
