Description

The Church of St Matthew is a multi-period parish church that dates back to around the 12th century, though it is largely from the 13th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble, with varying quality of coursing between the east and west ends. The church has a single cell with no aisles, integrating the nave and chancel. At the west end, there is a tile-hung bell turret. The south doorway features a plain round-headed arch with voussoirs, set within a brick porch that has a crow-stepped gable.

The church contains various window types from different building periods. The earliest window is located in the north wall, consisting of a single-splayed round-headed opening that is flush with the external wall face. There are several other single-splayed windows that are lancets, some of which have slightly trefoiled heads. Other windows feature Y tracery with hood moulds on the exterior. The chancel includes a string course and a south door with a double chamfered arch, as well as a blocked low-side window. The east window has single tracery and the end is built up to a gable with brick.

Inside, the church has a 19th-century roof and fittings, although the pulpit and panelling behind the altar may be from the 18th century. A plain wood screen separates the chancel from the nave. The font, dating to the 15th century, is octagonal and decorated with tracery and shields.
