Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church dating from the early 14th century, which underwent restoration in 1847. This restoration included the addition of a new chancel and a north aisle, carried out by Henry Isaac Stevens of Derby, designed to complement the medieval character of the church. The building is constructed from well-coursed grey-green sandstone that is heavily tooled.
The church features a west tower, which originally had a spire, adorned with gargoyles and thin corner pinnacles. The nave has a low clerestory with square-headed paired tracery lights, and there are two aisles with simple tracery windows, while curvilinear tracery is found in other areas. Inside, the nave arcade is supported by piers with heavy abaci, and there is a wall monument in the chancel made of marble, dedicated to Stephen Everard, dated 1615, which includes relief figures of his family. The churchyard contains a series of slate headstones.
