Description

Number 7, formerly known as Hemington Post Office, is a house with a former bakehouse at the rear, dating from the 15th to 16th centuries for the cross wing on the right and the 17th century for the wing on the left. The building has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cross wing features timber framing with close studding and roughcast infill, with an exposed cruck truss in the front gable. The 17th-century wing retains some timber framing, particularly in the original wall, but is mostly rebuilt in brick at the front. The left gable end has a high rubble stone base. The roof is thatched on the front and right side, while the rear is slated. Brick chimneys are located on either side of the left wing. The building is L-shaped with a later outshot in the rear angle and has one and a half storeys with three bays at the front, the right bay being gabled. The ground floor features three-light horizontal sash windows, all replaced in the 20th century. The upper storey has 20th-century two-light barred wooden casements, with those on the left under thatch eyebrows. Each of the right bays has a 20th-century glazed door. At the rear of the cross wing is the former bakehouse, which has lower walls of stone but is raised in brick. Additional brick outbuildings beyond are not of special architectural interest. The cross wing is said to contain three cruck trusses, although two are concealed. The front bay has heavy joists and a spine beam, while the left bays also feature stop-chamfered spine beams.
