Description
28 and 32 Market Street are early 19th-century shops with living accommodation above, which were altered in the late 20th century. The building is made of brick with stucco render on the gable end of the main section, and the roof is covered in slate.
The building has a rectangular plan, oriented roughly west to east. The main facade faces north and consists of seven bays over three storeys, with a window opening in each bay on the upper floors. The sixth bay is blind due to the conversion of the west end into a larger dwelling. The other bays feature sash windows with slim glazing bars; the first-floor windows are six-over-six, while those on the second floor are three-over-three. The shop fronts date from the 20th century.
Access to the upper storey flats is via an entrance at the north end of Union Passage. There are three separate dwellings on the upper floors, arranged over the first and second storeys, with the west end apartment having two bedrooms and two one-bedroom units to the east. The south facade has been altered, featuring 20th-century sash windows of various sizes and modern entrance doors.
Inside, the two shop units have been modernised, and they extend to the rear flat-roofed ranges that contain storerooms and offices, which are not included in the listing. The upper floor apartments, created in the late 20th century, have modern fittings and finishes throughout.
