Description

St Mary's Church of England Infants School, built in 1839 and originally known as The British School, is a red brick building in English bond. It has a slate roof with stone kneelers. The school is one storey high and has a gabled end facing the street. Chimneys are located on the gable ends. The northern facade, which faces the street, features a three-light Gothic arched window with stone dressings, and a trefoil blank light above. The western facade has four round-arched sash windows with glazing bars. The eastern facade has two similar windows, followed by a modern brick addition with a window above. To the south of this addition is a gabled porch dated 1853, featuring stone coping, an ogee arched door, and a Gothic arched side light. The school forms a group with No. 20, which is of local interest.
