Description
A group of five chest tombs, dating from the early 18th century to the early 19th century, is located approximately 10 meters south of the Church of St Mary the Virgin. The tombs are made of limestone, ironstone, and sandstone. The tomb closest to the church features a plain chest made of coursed squared ironstone, with two limestone panels on the west end that bear inscriptions for members of the Morley family, framed by moulded surrounds, and two large limestone ledgers. These ledgers slope upwards towards the west end and are inscribed in relief above the panels with the dates 1737 and 1709. Further south, there is a chest tomb, likely from the 18th century, made of grey sandstone with pilaster strips at the corners. The two southernmost tombs are early 19th century; one is made of limestone with tapering reeded corners and a slate inscription panel on the north side dedicated to William Orson, who died in 1830, and features a hipped top. The other is constructed of buff-coloured sandstone for John Orson, who died in 1825, and has concave panels on either end. A chest tomb dedicated to John Orson, who died in 1874, is noted but is not of special architectural interest.
