Description
The building is a cottage, formerly a public house. It largely dates to the late 17th and early 18th centuries, with earlier origins, and was extended in the later 18th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. The construction is of coursed ironstone rubble with a glazed pantile roof and brick end stacks. The building has a 2-unit plan, presenting a 3-window range over two storeys. A central 20th-century door has a stop-chamfered wood lintel. The ground floor has 3-light casement windows with wood lintels, while the first floor has 2-light casements also with stop-chamfered wood lintels. The eaves have been raised. A stone-coped gable is visible on the left side. A one-unit, single-storey and attic extension to the right, likely from the 18th century and featuring a stone-coped gable end, is also present. A single-storey extension in front, partly overlapping the main block, has a lean-to roof and a small, reset medieval 2-light window, likely from the 15th century. This window is carved from a single piece of limestone and features a cusped ogee arch, trefoil decoration at the top of the lights, a spherical triangle to the head with Y tracery, and a hood mould. Inside, the cottage contains chamfered spine beams, a collar truss to the roof, and a stud partition. The medieval window has a plain, flat-tooled interior and no provision for glazing. The cottage is thought to be near or on the site of a former medieval chantry house, as the small medieval window is presumed to be a remnant of that structure.
