Description
The Great Meeting is a Unitarian Chapel located in Hinckley, dated 1722. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a black brick plinth and features two parallel hipped roofs covered in plain tiles. The building is oriented to face north-east and is two storeys high. The corners are marked by paired pilasters that support the moulded eaves cornices on the side elevations, which are interrupted on the front to accommodate upper windows set at a higher level. This design creates the impression of an open pediment, truncated by the hipped roof ends.
The front has a regular arrangement of four windows, consisting of narrow outer windows and wider inner ones, all featuring fixed lights with diamond-latticed panes set in cast iron mullioned and transomed frames beneath segmental arches. The side elevations have four bays with similar windows, and there is an entrance located at the north-east end of the north-west front. At the rear, there are 19th-century additions that include the main entrance.
Inside, the ground floor has been modernised, but the chapel still retains its original oak panelled galleries and pulpits, which are flanked by alcoves designed for 18th-century theological students.
