Description

The Church of St Peter is a church built between 1836 and 1837, with an extension added in 1889. It was designed by William Railton, with the extension by Ewan Christian. The church is constructed from Charnwood granite, featuring ashlar dressings, and has slate roofs with coped gables and cross finials. It has a chamfered plinth and a cill band. The layout includes a nave with a chancel and a west tower, supported by angle buttresses.

The tower features a pointed arch doorway on the west side with double plank doors and iron hinges, above which are two tall lancet windows and a small round opening with quatrefoil tracery. The south face has a single lancet window with a pair of very narrow lancets above it. A projecting stair turret on the north face includes a shouldered arch doorway. The top stage of the tower has three lancet bell openings, with the central one being slightly broader, on each face. The tower is topped with plain parapets and simple corner pinnacles.

The nave has five lancet windows on each side, separated by buttresses. The south front of the chancel features a pointed arched priest's door flanked by single small lancets, while the east end has a single three-light pointed arch window with plate tracery. The north front of the chancel includes a projecting gabled organ chamber with a single lancet window to the west, and the chancel has a single small lancet window.

Inside, the church boasts a fine wooden single hammer beam roof and double chamfered arches in the chancel and tower. The chancel floor is laid with Minton tiles, and it features a carved alabaster reredos. Other fittings include a brass and wood altar rail, carved wooden choir stalls and pews, and a carved wooden octagonal pulpit.
