Description
The Congerstone war memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1922, with additional names added after the Second World War. It is made of stone and features a cross approximately 3 meters tall with short arms. The face of the cross and the upper part of the tapering four-sided shaft are adorned with Celtic interlace carvings. This shaft sits atop a simple, slightly tapering plinth and a single-stepped platform.
The shaft includes a dedication, while the plinth contains the main inscriptions, which are incised and highlighted in black lettering. The inscription reads: "ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS OF CONGERSTONE GOPSALL AND BILSTONE IN LOVING AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 FROM CONGERSTONE (NAMES) FROM GOPSALL (NAMES) GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.
